The Congo river basin hosts the 2nd largest tropical rainforest in the world
It is also one of the largest tropical peatlands (Carbon-sink) areas in the world.
Spread over 13500 square kilometres, the Odzala- Kokila National Park listed as UNESCO World Heritage Natural Sites since 2023, is home to the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorillas.
The ecosystem is a mosaic of dense rainforests, savannah grasslands and open forest clearings called Bais.
Around 100 plus mammal species & over 400 birds species call this place their home.
Elephants & termite mounds are the keystone species of this region.
The Western lowland Gorillas; common Chimpanzees; & around 17-18 types of primate species including the DeBrazza; Mangabeys & Guereze Colubus are found here.
Elephants; hippos; wild hogs; wild buffaloes; leopards and Hyenas who are Apex predators co-exist in this fragile ecosystem.
